LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Much like the U of L men, the Cardinal women's basketball team was hoping for a higher seeding, but will try to make the best of what they got from the NCAA tournament selection committee.
Hoping for a 1 and possibly a 2 seed, Louisville (30-4) is a 3 seed starting in Iowa City, Iowa against 14th seeded Idaho. That's Sunday March 23rd at 5:30 pm EDT. The winner gets either 6th seed Iowa on its home floor or 11th seed Marist. If U of L wins those two games, they get to return home to host the regional where potential opponents include 2nd-seeded West Virginia and top seed Tennessee. Toungue firmly in cheek, Head Coach Jeff Walz said he was just happy his Cardinals got in the tournament, not sure if their 30-4 record would be good enough for a bid.
Kentucky (24-8) is also a 3rd seed, playing at home to start things off. The Wildcats meet 14th seed Wright State Saturday March 22nd at 11:00 am at Memorial Coliseum. The winner meets 6th-seeded Syracuse or number 11 Chattanooga. That 2nd-round game is Monday March 24th at 6:30 pm for the right to go to the Notre Dame Regional.
Sun Belt Conference Tournament Champion Western Kentucky is the 15th seed in the Notre Dame Regional. They will get 2nd seed Baylor in Waco, Texas Saturday March 22nd at 6:30 pm EDT. The winner of that one gets the winner of the California-Fordham match-up. It's the 17th all-time appearance for WKU (24-8) but its first since the 2007-08 season.
