LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A month after announcing massive layoffs, KentuckyOne Health announced a partnership with Walgreens.

KentuckyOne Health will team up with healthcare clinics at select Walgreens in hopes of enhancing the hospital group's primary care program.

Officials tell us the clinics will not only reduce emergency room traffic, but allow nurse practitioners to look at patient history and consult with physicians.

They also say the partnership is in no way connected to last month's layoffs, and they claim no money changed hands.

Matt Gibson, chief strategy and business development officer at KentuckyOne Health, says the reduction in workforce was essential in the company's long term sustainability.

"As our reimbursement continues to go down, we have to become more and more efficient on the expense side. So it was a step, albeit a very painful step, to moving forward and becoming more efficient," said Gibson.

The clinics will be located at six Walgreens in Jefferson County and four in southern Indiana.
