LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Police arrested a man after they say he stole a car and led police on a high speed chase, according to police records.

Derek Vessels was arrested Tuesday evening on Wood Ave. after police say he stole a car, leading police on a chase with two other passengers -- including a 14-year-old.

An officer witnessed Vessels driving a stolen 1998 maroon Chrysler Cirrus that was traveling westbound on Greenwood Rd. When that officer tried to stop Vessels, he refused, and continued to speed up, according to the arrest report.

Police say Vessels weaved in and out of traffic, passing vehicles in oncoming lanes in an effort to get away from police.

Officers were able to keep up with Vessels because of help from pedestrians who continuously flagged the officer down.

Officers located Vessels along with two other subjects, including the 14-year-old, at a home on Wood Ave. The three were found hiding in a garage and the stolen car was found parked behind a fence at the same address. Upon officers making contact, Vessels said, "It's all on me, it's all on me."

Vessels also admitted to concealing heroin from officers by eating it while he was hiding. Police recovered the empty baggie with brown residue.

Vessels is charged with auto theft, wanton endangerment, fleeing from police, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and operating on a revoked license."
