New app helps runners to raise money for charity

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Runners spend hours out on roads training for The Triple Crown, The Kentucky Derby Marathon, and several other races.

Many runners are raising money for different charities along the way. The runners have done so by becoming sponsored athletes.

"I always wanted to find a way to get companies to sponsor me, but I'm just a regular guy. I'm not a professional athlete so companies would never sponsor me," said Gene Gurkoff, the founder of Charity Miles.

Charity Miles is an app that allows athletes to cash in on their mileage.

"You can choose from over 26 charities to walk, run, or bike for and whenever you choose a charity, you walk, run, or bike and for every mile that you go, you earn money for your charity for a corporate sponsor," said Gurkoff.

Walkers and runners earn $0.25 per mile.

Bikers earn $0.10 per mile.

As you exercise, the app tracks your distance and the money adds up, coming from sponsors such as Humana. "It's a natural fit so we think its a perfect marriage of staying fit and helping to raise money for your favorite charities," said Tres Waterfield, a sponsorship consultant with Humana.

Gurkoff said, "I figured if I could get enough people together, then collectively we could have the impact that a professionally sponsored athlete would and collectively we could all become sponsored for our charities."

Gurkoff added, "We say it and we mean it. Every mile matters. No matter who you are, you can make a difference."
