UPDATE: LMPD investigating dead body on Phyllis Ave. as homicide

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A homicide investigation is underway after a body was found in a south Louisville neighborhood Saturday morning.

A small side yard between two houses near Churchill Downs became a crime scene after a woman was found dead in the grass.

"From here on, the homicide unit will be handling the investigation," Detective Nick Owen told WDRB.

Detectives were combing the area hours after the body was found looking for clues.

"Detectives have been in touch with many people in the neighborhood. A lot of people characterize it as a pretty quiet neighborhood," said Owen.

Tim Miller has lived on Phyllis Avenue for 22 years and says he's never known a murder to happen nearby.

"It's a shock you know. A lady comes out and set her garbage out and finds someone dead by their garage. It's kind of scary," said Miller.

He says he talked to his neighbor that found the body.

"She was in total shock. She didn't know what to do," Miller said.

He told WDRB no one seems to have heard or seen anything unusual.

"No one really knows what went on or know what happened you know. I hope they find out what happened to this person," he added.

Miller said it's an incident that will stay on his mind until police learn more.

"Yes, it does make you uneasy because it's unknown. It just throws you for a loop especially because it might be somebody we know in the neighborhood who knows but it's really a shock," Miller said.

"We're just trying to track down anybody that saw anything, anybody that heard anything or they thought was unusual last night, this morning or even the preceding weeks, anything that stands out," said Detective Owen.

Officials haven't released the woman's identity but say she was in her 50's.

Detectives say they are interviewing neighbors, but have no suspects at this time.

This is a developing story and WDRB News will have more details as they become available.
