LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Horse racing, Bluegrass and Duke basketball?

Sen. Mitch McConnell's campaign is doing damage control after his latest campaign video was released.

The online video features a split-second clip of Duke basketball players celebrating the 2010 national championship. Kentucky won the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

It couldn't happen at a worse time for the campaign, as Bluegrass rivals U of L and UK are gearing up for a Sweet 16 matchup Friday.

A McConnell spokeswoman blames the mistake on a vendor and says the campaign was horrified.

But after replacing the Duke celebration with an image of current UK player Julius Randle, the University of Kentucky sent a cease and desist letter to McConnell's campaign for improperly using an image of a player for commercial purposes.

The campaign then released the following statement from spokesperson and UK alumnus Allison Moore:

"Earlier today, issues related to the use of NCAA images in a web video created by an outside vendor for our campaign were brought to our attention.

The video was taken down immediately after questions were raised.

Since that time, we have received correspondence from the University of Kentucky, we have spoken with them, and the matter has been resolved.

To be clear, neither the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville nor any student-athlete was aware of any image used in this video, and actions have been taken with the vendor to ensure this never happens again.

We have also reached out to the University of Louisville to make sure they are aware of the situation and offered our full cooperation to clear up any misunderstanding.

It was our intention to honor our great Kentucky basketball traditions. Our campaign apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Alison Lundergan Grimes was quick to point out the mistake, saying McConnell has clearly lost touch with Kentucky if he doesn't know the difference between UK and Duke basketball.
