Bullitt County Board of Education sets graduation date for seniors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bullitt County seniors will don their graduation caps on June 8, pending legislative approval.

The Bullitt County Board of Education determined the graduation date after a vote that took place during an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon.

The Board voted to extend school days by 14 minutes, starting April 7. The last day of school has been set for June 6.

Ky. lawmakers have come to an agreement that calls for districts to end their year on June 6, if they have 1,062 instructional hours by that point.

Bullitt Co. Schools changed the schedule on the assumption lawmakers would pass it.

"Parents need to know and our community needed to know. And, we have people wanting to make plans. And, we couldn't make a decision. We were waiting on the legislature," said board chair Tim Wiseheart.

But some parents are furious that the board voted to for graduation to take place on a Sunday.

To put graduation on a Sunday -- and, you know they're going to have it Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, Sunday night. You're talking three sets of schools, those kids are going to have to make a choice: Graduate or put God first. And, I can tell you, my child's going to put God first," said parent Marla Brown.

Superintendent Keith Davis says if the graduations weren't held on June 8, they would have to be put off until the following Saturday.

The Ky. Senate passed the snow days plan Thursday and the House expected to approve it Friday.

The long-delayed decision comes after an unusually snowy winter that resulted in a higher-than-usual number of snow days. Establishment of a graduation date means students and parents will be able to make plans for friends and family to attend graduation ceremonies.
