Thousands turn out for Louisville's WizardWorld Comic Con

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- WizardWorld Comic Con came to Louisville over the weekend. The festival of all things fantasy, sci-fi and superhero drew thousands of fans to the convention center.

Comic Con serves a community event for people with similar interests in movies, TV series and comic books. The fans come together to meet stars, listen to panel discussions and celebrate their interests.

"I fell in love with the [comic book] genre and with the whole Marvel universe" said Iron Man cosplayer Michael Surber. "I've been that way ever since and to actually get to share that, and the kids go 'WOW!'...that really makes me feel good."

A cosplayer is someone who dresses in costume like a superhero or other character. Surber made his own Iron Man costume complete with a lighted 'arc reactor' in the chest plate at home, but he says it's not his first.

He says he used to dress as Wolverine. "I would have ate that up, walking around and seeing Wolverine walking around and to get my picture with him."

That's the sense of community that draws people like Rob and Amber Jones. The married couple waited in line Saturday to meet Matt Smith, who played The Eleventh Doctor in the BBC Series 'Doctor Who.'

"It's basically our primary hobby, all of the different shows we watch and games we play," said Amber Jones, "and to be surrounded by people who share those interests is so much fun."

Whovians, or fans of 'Doctor Who,' turned out in all sorts of costumes to catch a glimpse of Smith or his companion Karen Gillan. Smith and Gillan starred in the fifth through the seventh series from 2009-2012.

The two posed for photos together with fans Saturday morning and even had one couple get engaged during a photo shoot.

The culture of interests can go so much further than entertainment, Rob Jones said "I love Doctor Who, one of my late friends actually got me into it, so when I watch a show it's like being with him again."

Comic Con also hosts panel discussions with actors and creators of shows and comic books who discuss their content.

This weekend's Comic Con included stars of the AMC series 'The Walking Dead' and HBO's 'Game of Thrones.'

Sean Astin, who played Sam in 'The Lord of the Rings' and Rudy in the movie 'Rudy' signed autographs and met with fans Saturday morning.

The event even included an appearance from 'Airplane!' star Robert Hays.
