LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A man was killed Tuesday morning in a logging accident in Switzerland, Co., Indiana.
The incident occurred at a property adjacent to Drakes Ridge Rd. in Pleasant Township, according to a police press release.
At approximately 11:18 a.m., the Switzerland County Sheriff's Office received a report of a man who was injured after a tree fell and pinned him underneath.
The man was identified as Richard E. Hunter of Osgood, Ind. Hunter was pronounced deceased at the accident scene at 11:48 a.m. The time of death was pronounced by Switzerland Co. Coroner Lewis Fritter.
Hunter was employed by a logging company based out of Batesville, Ind. It is believed that Hunter attempted to cut a tree down, and prior to it falling to the ground, it got hung up by another tree.
Hunter then attempted to cut down another tree which was possibly preventing the falling tree from coming to the ground safely. When Hunter moved around the tree for a final cut, the original cut tree shifted and fell to the ground, striking and pinning Mr. Hunter. The incident is being investigated as a logging accident only.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Switzerland County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Switzerland County Coroner's Office.
Other units assisting at the scene were members of the East Enterprise Fire Department, Moorefield Fire Department, and Switzerland County EMS.
Anyone with information about this or any investigation is urged to contact the Switzerland County Sheriff's Office at 427-3636.
