Local restaurant owner competing in World Pizza Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A local restaurant owner is heading to the homeland of pizza and hoping to come back with some bragging rights. Victor DiOrio has been recruited to compete in the World Pizza Championships in Parma, Italy this year.

"We just got into it because we love the pizza and we love to cook things," DiOrio said about his passion for the pizza business.

We met up with him at his DiOrio's Pizza and Pub location in the Highlands. He opened the first restaurant in Saint Matthews nearly four years ago with his brother and a friend.

"We still chug along and still seem to be doing just as good as ever," DiOrio said.
His more than 20 years of pizza making experience will soon be put to the test, as he faces international competition.

"It's like any Olympics, you'll have guys who make pizzas quickly, acrobatics, the guys that throw it all over the place and under their legs and things like that and then you have the culinary part, to actually try and make the best tasting pizza," DiOrio said.

That's where he'll come in. DiOrio says he was recruited by the U.S. Pizza Team after winning a competition in the Bluegrass last year. He made what's called "Aaron's Heat and Sweet." It has a mix of toppings from pineapple, to jalepenos, to spicy sausage and is on the menu at the restaurant.

"It's the random flavors I think that people like," he said.

But in Italy, DiOrio says he'll probably make something more classic, stick to the basics, in the country pizza is known to have originated. He says the team will face more than two dozen countries starting Monday.

"You'll learn so much, that's the number one thing, but two, I'd like to win. I'd like to come back and say 'I won the best pizza in the world.' Bring back all that knowledge and try and make our pizza restaurant even better," he said.

This will be DiOrio's first trip to Italy. According to PMQ Magazine, the competition runs from April 7 to 9.
