LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bridge officials stopped the slide of the Milton-Madison Bridge Wednesday due to high winds.

Before crews halted their efforts, they had moved the bridge 16 feet (Watch a time lapse video in the player above).

That's approximately 30 percent of the total length of the slide, which is 55 feet -- it's the largest bridge slide in North America.

Crews are moving the bridge onto permanent refurbished piers.

Bridge officials say the slide will resume as soon as weather conditions permit, but it will be no earlier than this weekend.

The bridge will reopen one week after the slide is completed.
