Local business blends wine and dogs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's a chance to get a good bottle of wine and a meet some great dogs. We take you to Vines and Canines, the only place in town that pairs the two perfectly.

"We wanted to lighten up the atmosphere of wine and make it a little more enjoyable and everyone knows it's always better when your dog is hanging out with you," said Marc DeMichele, Founder of Vines and Canines.

It's a place where you can sit, stay, and sip. Vines and Canines in the Douglass Loop is the perfect place to pair a cocktail with your best friend.

DeMichele said, "I was always finding vineyards that were really small production and low yield vineyards that didn't make it in to the big stores and people were really missing out on being able to taste and enjoy these types of wine."

Marc made it his mission to find family-driven vineyards and bring their wines to Louisville. He paired that with local goods and dog treats and toys.

"The Highlands is very eclectic and obviously our business would be considered to be a bit eclectic so we just thought it was a perfect fit," said DeMichele.

"We've had people in from all over Europe who say they've never seen anything like this before so we're just trying to have fun with it," said Dale Price, President of Vines and Canines.

Vines and Canines teamed up with Kentuckiana Animal Rescue and has adopted out 28 dogs in the past year. Every week you'll find a new adoptable dog like Zack roaming around the store.

"Almost every dog that we've chosen was a dog that was urgent like Zack, Zack was ready to be euthanized," said Julie Zlatos, a foster for Kentuckiana Animal Rescue.

It's the perfect blend, saving a dogs life one sip at a time.

"We came to the conclusion that all you need is a good dog and a great bottle of wine and life is ok so that's how this idea was born," said DeMichele.

Vines and Canines hosts monthly wine events and hopes to start their own dog rescue this summer.
