Victim in Friday assault dies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man who was brutally assaulted Friday morning inside the business where he works, died Saturday night at University Hospital.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office identified the man as Philip Schulz of Jeffersonville. The coroner says the 63-year-old man died of multiple closed head and neck injuries sustained during the assault.

Authorities say it happened around 5 a.m. at Packaging Unlimited, located at the corner of 12th and Kentucky Streets.

Employees who work nearby say the man had been beaten.

Police spent the morning looking for clues and talking with local businesses.

Bobby Reed, owner of a business next door, says he hasn't seen anything like this in the area.
"We moved down here about 15 years ago and we've really only had one gas can stolen since we've been down here, when one of my son's was cutting the grass in the field. I mean, we've never had any problems like that in this area to be honest with you," Reed says.

Reed says nearby businesses provided police with security footage.

"We are open around the clock and we had people leaving this morning apparently 10 minutes after the alarm was going off, and then other people coming in 20 minutes after the alarm was going off, but they didn't hear anything because we pulled the list of people and things like that for the police officer's."
