Victim of burglary assault dies, police look for suspects

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jeffersonville man died Saturday night, more than a day after walking into a burglary at his workplace.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner, Phillip Schulz, 63, died from trauma to his head and neck.

Schulz was reporting to work at Packaging Unlimited around 4:30 a.m. Friday, when he was put face-to-face with a burglar. Police said they weren't sure what the suspect was looking for, or how he entered the building.

Schulz' son said his father was a grandfather, drummer, and all-around "nice guy".

"I'm still at a loss for words to explain what it's done to my family," said John Schulz.

John Schulz said his dad's injuries lead him to believe that his father didn't fight back when the burglar started attacking him, and he said he knows his dad gave the man a chance to leave without consequence.

But instead, police say, the man continued to brutally attack Schulz with a hard object. Police would not say what exactly the man was beaten with.

"This company made cardboard boxes. I don't know what would be in this place worth taking a man's life over," said Schulz.

Schulz said surveillance cameras outside Packaging Unlimited weren't working at the time of the homicide and burglary, but the owner of a business across the street said they're offering their footage in hopes that it provides clues.

Without any arrests, family is looking for help from community members.

"If anybody was downtown at 12th and Kentucky at anytime Friday morning and you saw anything that was out of the ordinary...please step forward," said Schulz. "I promise anybody that's watching this that I'll fight it until I can't breath no more. We're going to get this guy."
