LMPD: suspect shot after waving gun at officers

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- LMPD investigators say officers shot a man who they initially said forced his way into an apartment early Friday morning.

Now police say he may not have broken into the apartment, and that they found no signs of forced entry.

LMPD spokeswoman Carey Klain says officers were called to the Huntington Park Place Apartments on Huntington Park Drive about 4:30 a.m.

That's where investigators say two adults in an apartment called 911 to report an intruder. When police arrived, the suspect displayed a gun and threatened officers with it. That's when officers shot him.

WDRB saw at least 12 shell casings in front of the apartment complex.

"Officers responded and did observe the subject in the window at the apartment," said Klain. "Officers set up a perimeter at that time and began to make contact with the subject, who became very aggressive, waving a weapon at the officers and threatening them with that weapon. Officers did engage that subject and did fire on him."

Police say the man was so agitated that he kicked out a window screen at the apartment. We're told the suspect was outside when he was shot.

The suspect is believed to be 30 to 40 years old. Klain says he was taken to University Hospital and is expected to survive.

Police initially said the victims claimed they didn't know the suspect, but investigators now believe that may not be true.

No officers or residents were injured.

The suspect's name was not immediately released.
