LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Louisville man after they say he drove backwards down a ramp exit onto I-65 S.

James Michael Spaulding was arrested by sheriff's deputies Sunday morning after they say he drove backwards onto the I-65 S exit ramp at Preston St. at a high rate of speed, according to an arrest report. The sheriff's office says Spaulding was driving a 2002 gray Ford, when an officer was trying to enter I-65 S via Preston St. was nearly struck Spaulding's car, according to police records.

The officer reportedly had to slam the brakes on his vehicle, causing the vehicle's anti-lock system to activate, which nearly sent the officer into a guard rail. Authorities say Spaulding told authorities that his girlfriend was being attacked, which made him decide to take the risk of going backward onto the expressway.

Spaulding is charged with wanton endangerment.
