LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two people died Saturday after an early morning wrong-way crash on Greenbelt Highway, just south of Greenwood Rd. in PRP, according to Louisville Metro Police Public Information Officer Carey Klain.

Jacobo Mendez-Lopez, 31, of Louisville, was identified Monday by authorities as the person who died of injuries sustained in the collision. Lopez was pronounced deceased at University Hospital at around 4 a.m. Saturday.

The Jefferson County coroner's office says 17-year-old Elissa Greenwell died at University Hospital at 11:12 a.m. Saturday. Police say she was driving the right way when her vehicle was struck.

Authorities received a call at 2:37 a.m. Saturday, and the incident was initially reported as an accident with injury.

Police say a tan Chevy Blazer, driven by Lopez, was traveling on the wrong side of the highway (driving northbound in the southbound lanes), when he hit a Blue Chevy Blazer, driven by Greenwell that was headed south on the Greenbelt Highway.

Both drivers had to be rescued from their vehicles. Crews from Louisville Metro EMS and PRP Fire responded to the scene. Both drivers were transported to University Hospital in very serious condition.

Authorities say they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, in addition to Lopez traveling down the wrong side of the highway.

LMPD traffic unit is investigating the collision. Both speed and use of seat belts are unknown at this time.
