Kentucky Ale/Town Branch Distillery offer Julep alternatives for Derby

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Mint juleps can be an acquired taste for even the most experienced Kentucky Derby fans. But there Kentucky Ale has a few ideas to switch things up. Town Branch master distiller Mark Coffman and Alltech Lexington Brewing & Distilling's Danielle Palmer have one drink to warm things up and another to cool things down.

Bluegrass Sundown

It's a bourbon-infused coffee liqueur that is sold as a concentrate. A Kentucky version of an Irish whiskey. One of Town Branch distillery's four spirits it produces, available in liquor stores in Louisville.

Bluegrass Sundown is made by pouring in a tempered glass 1/3 Bluegrass Sundown followed by 2/3 boiling water. No need to stir. Simply float heavy whipping cream on top of the mixture using an inverted spoon to finish the drink. Enjoy sipping the warm liquid through the cool cream. Perfect for Derby brunch!

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale Mint Julep

About: Town Branch Distillery sits right across from the brewery that makes the Kentucky Ale family of beers. Together, the "brewstillery" - one of only a handful across the U.S. - is Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is the flagship brew of the company. Made using our Kentucky Ale brew, but then aging it for six weeks in fresh Kentucky bourbon barrels from the best distilleries in bourbon country, so that it picks up the wonderful tastes of caramel, cherry and vanilla. A wonderful sipping beer, best served in a snifter.
