Crews continue repairs after massive water main break; boil water advisory lifted

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Boil Water Advisory for the general Highlands area impacted by a water main break at the intersection of Baxter Avenue and Eastern Parkway has been lifted. Water quality tests confirm that the water is safe to drink.

That's according to a statement in a news release from Louisville Water Company spokeswoman Kelley Dearing-Smith.

She says if your refrigerator has an automatic ice machine, allow the receptacle to fill twice and discard the ice before using it. If you have a chilled water line on your refrigerator door, she recommends allowing it to run for approximately one minute before using the water.

"I am praying for that! Yes, I want them to lift this advisory," said Michael Beckmann, general manager of Boombozz Pizza and Taphouse in the Highlands, and it looks like his prayers have been answered.

"If I get a big Friday night like we get around here, this could get crazy."

Things got crazy on Thursday around 1 p.m. after a giant water main break sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Baxter Avenue.

"You know, we still don't know what caused this water main to break, but it was a critical failure because this is a major transmission main, it's a 48-inch in diameter pipe that carries a large volume of water," said Dearing-Smith.

And that's why water crews have been working to fix the problem, and early Friday afternoon were able to lift a Boil Water Advisory for thousands of customers in the area.

:"What the crews are doing is they're removing layers of asphalt so that we can actually get into the ground and begin to repair the pipe," Dearing-Smith said.

Although the water is now safe to drink, it could still be several days before the water main break is repaired.

"Louisville Water is going to be here throughout the weekend, this is not an easy repair, it takes a lot of work because after we repair the water main, we still have to fix the roadway," Dearing-Smith explained.

Meanwhile, with the weekend here and the advisory lifted, the folks at Boombozz can focus on making the dough.

"I expect this to be a very busy Friday night, we're walking into the greatest week in Louisville, Kentucky, Derby week so yes, we're ready," said Beckmann.
