Churchill Downs set to open for spring meet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It's opening night for the spring meet at Churchill Downs, but some of the finishing touches won't be finished quite yet.

Hundreds of construction crews are working to finish $26.5 million worth of projects at the track. Churchill Downs put in a giant screen, which will be unveiled Saturday. New restrooms, 750 speakers, concessions and vendor spaces are also part of the latest improvements at the track.

The new Grandstand Terrace area is still getting the finishing touches.

Churchill Downs spokesperson Darren Rogers said, "Obviously we'd like to have everything go smoothly, but with the winter we had and schedule adjustments along the way, we'll just adapt accordingly, but we're on track to be ready for Oaks and Derby."

Churchill Downs opens at 4 p.m. Saturday.
