LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several drivers were hospitalized in an accident in the Hillview area when police say a Shepherdsville man was driving under the influence.

Metro Police arrested 24-year-old Duane Skaggs Saturday night, after witnesses and emergency responders told LMPD officers that he smelled of alcohol.

According to an arrest report, Skaggs was smoking a cigarette at the scene of the accident and refused to stop, forcing an officer to take it from him.

Police say when Skaggs took a field sobriety test, his eyes were moving uncontrollably, he miscounted and took too many steps, stepped off the line and placed his raised foot on the ground.

Skaggs allegedly denied drinking, but after failing the sobriety tests he stated he had stopped drinking at noon.

On the way to the jail, officers asked Skaggs what time it was and he allegedly responded that it was 7 or 8 p.m., but no later than 9 -- police say it was 10:02 p.m.

The other drivers were taken to the hospital and one was bleeding from her head when she was extracted from her car.

Skaggs is charged with wanton endangerment and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
