Indiana approves new math and English standards to replace Common Core

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There's a new educational future for Indiana.

The State Board of Education approved new math and English standards on Monday afternoon. The 10-1 vote makes Indiana the first state to formally abandon Common Core educational standards, which are currently used by 45 states.

Opponents argue the replacement standards are watered down versions of Common Core, but state superintendent Glenda Ritz says this plan is a first for Indiana as they partnered with higher education to create the guide for what students should learn in each grade.
