LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Derby Festival's Great Bed Races rolled through Broad bent Arena Monday night. 17-year-old NASA AK&MN Pro Series driver Ben Rhodes and his team took home the top prize. They finished with a time of 33.41 seconds to grad the Champions Division top spot.
Rhodes' team beat out five-time returning champions Curtain Call Photo Booth, who finished with a time of 33.97 seconds.
In the Fun division, newcomer team "Winner Takes All placed first with a time of 34.16.
General Electric Brave Team, dressed like lions and a lion in a cage, took home the price for 'best decorated bed'. Rubies South side Grill and Bar won best costumes with their pigs gone wild theme, complete with a surfer and a shark.
The Briny-Hardy Company team took home the 'cone eater' prize for knocking over the most cones and not doing a good job of sticking to the course.
Teams of five (four pushers and one rider) raced around the arena pushing decorated beds in a 600 yard dash to the finish line.
More than 40 teams participated in this year's race, which was the med around 'Where the Wild Things Are.'
Participants say this is the event they look most forward to.
Rider Tim Alexander says "We get the course about a week ahead of time and we take the beds out and fix the steering to kind map what the course is going to be like whether it is going to be right turns or left turns and we all will come here about two hours early and kind sprint the course and get a feel for what it is going to be like and that is about all we will do with practice."
Participants got the chance to win a variety of prizes for the fastest course time, best decoration and most entertaining.
