LMPD increasing security, but says no threats to Derby events

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Derby events are in full swing across Louisville, drawing large crowds and concerns about safety.

As is always the case, Churchill Downs will have increased security in place during Derby Week, and law enforcement officials tell us they plan to step up patrols for the Pegasus Parade.

Police say they have been monitoring social media since an outbreak of violence in downtown Louisville on March 22, but so far have received no indications that there will be any problems at any Derby events.

"I can tell you without hesitation right now that we know of no threat that would threaten the security of anybody at any event at this time," said Maj. Kelly Jones with Louisville Metro Police.

Even so, there will be more officers on hand at this year's Pegasus Parade, and police plan to use recently installed security cameras to keep a close eye on the parade route. Some cameras are even being moved so that Broadway can be monitored all the way to Ninth Street.

"The technology was awesome, the quality was awesome, and we felt that it would be the responsible thing to do to put some of those up and down along Broadway," said Jones.

Ultimately, Jones said, he is confident his officers, security, and volunteers will work together to make the 140th Kentucky Derby yet another success.

"I feel very confident in our plans," said Jones. "I feel like we have good plans, we have professional people, and we have a lot of experience doing these things."

Police are asking the public to help as well by reporting any suspicious activities or packages.

Of course anyone entering the track this Friday or Saturday should expect to be searched.

LMPD also wants event goers to remember there are many items they cannot bring into Churchill Downs during Oaks or Derby. For a list of restricted items click here.
