SNEAK PEEK: Pegasus Parade Preview Party

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Floats and inflatables are taking over the Kentucky Exposition Center. But before the Pegasus Parade Preview Party opens to the public at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, WDRB is giving you a sneak peek.

Colorful and fun. It's a trip outside the classroom. Hundreds of kids like preschoolers from Coleridge-Taylor Elementary are taking a field trip to see these floats up close. And they're learning some important lessons, too.

"One, discipline and staying organized and to just learn how to have fun," said Towanda Cross with Coleridge-Taylor Elementary School.

The giant Pegasus inflatable is always a crowd favorite. Some of the balloons are more than 60 feet tall. On average, each one requires more than 6,000 cubic feet of helium.

"I like the golden Pegasus because I like the color gold. I like horses and Pegasus,"said Kenwood Elementary third-grader Abigail Hasselback.
Salma Dirmy, a third-grader at Kenwood Elementary had her eye on one particular float.

"It has roses. Roses are my favorite flower and I love horses."

It takes a lot of hard work to put these floats together. About 100 people helped create one masterpiece, which made cartoon characters come to life.

"We started working on it in the beginning of March, over 400 hours, all built by volunteers from Norton Healthcare. Each of the letters are cut out of styrofoam and painted in glitter," said Norton Healthcare spokesperson Kathleen Recktenwald.

From race cars to dragons, there is plenty to see at the parade. All of it is putting smiles on everyone's faces.

"You want them to think about cartoons, remembering their childhood when you saw the Smurfs or the Flintstones and those type characters, and what it brings back, just those memories," Recktenwald said.

The Preview Party runs until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Parking is $8.

The Pegasus Parade is on Thursday night.
