LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man arrested last week after a violent fight with his wife is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Police say it happened April 22 at the couple's home in the 500 block of south Jackson Street. According to the arrest report, that's where 87-year-old Joseph Smith and his wife were arguing about an "odd scent."

During the argument, Smith allegedly made several threatening statements to his wife, including: "This is the day I'm going to kill you myself" and "This is going to be the end."

Police say Smith then began choking his wife with both hands until she heard "a ringing sound in her ear."

The violence continued to escalate, police say, when Smith grabbed a handgun and a shotgun and aimed them at his wife before allegedly striking her in the shoulder with one of the guns. Police say the force of the blow shattered the bones in her shoulder.

Police say the woman managed to get away from Smith and called for help. She was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Smith was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, wanton endangerment, and terroristic threatening.  He's being held at Metro Corrections on a $250,000 cash bond.
