LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville couple say they got a bargain on their Kentucky Derby contender.

Daniel and Lori Dougherty own Ride on Curlin. He had his morning work and was enjoying a bath outside his barn Wednesday morning. The former furniture dealers bought him for just $25,000. They turned down a $1 million offer after the horse set a track record at Ellis Park.

"Ride on Curlin proved that he deserves to be in the Kentucky Derby," said Lori Dougherty. "He's seasoned, he's strong. He knows his job and he loves to run."

They're excited Calvin Borel will be riding him in the Kentucky Derby. Ride on Curlin is sired by former Horse of the Year, Curlin, North America's all-time richest Thoroughbred with $10.5 million in earnings.
