Highlands intersection reopens after water main break

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Crews reopened a busy Highlands intersection Wednesday that had been shut down since a large water main break last week.

The intersection of Baxter Avenue and Eastern Parkway collapsed Thursday when five million gallons of water flowed through Highland streets.

"It has been nothing but construction crews, security guards, and a lot of construction equipment on this corner," said business owner Kristi Fulkerson. She can't really escape it. Fulkerson lives nearby and owns Yoga on Baxter, which is two buildings down from all the action.

"Trying to keep a business open during a road closure has been challenging," she said.

But she hasn't canceled one yoga class and says her clients have come despite the closed roads. Fulkerson says even the high water can't keep her clients away.

Wednesday, she waited and watched as crews finished up. Road stripes were painted, barriers removed and traffic lights turned back on.

"Our repairs actually were done on Sunday, we had installed the new piece on the water main and done the final engineering that we needed to do, and then mother nature decided she wanted to rain for two days," said Louisville Water Co. Spokesperson Kelley Dearing Smith.

She says this was a big project. "The water main that broke was a cast iron pipe, it was 48 inches in diameter and it's a very interesting part of our infrastructure here because it's a section where you have a lot of water mains coming together," Dearing Smith said.

The work has now come together at a good time. Traffic is expected to pick up in this area as Derby gets closer.

"There are cars coming through the intersection, people are out, there's horn honking, it's a lively day on eastern parkway," Fulkerson said.
