LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Trainer Bob Baffert says Hoppertunity will not be running in this year's Kentucky Derby due to an injury.
After Wednesday's post position draw, Baffert expressed concern about how long the colt would have to wait in gate at the 11th position.
"The only The only disadvantage is that Hoppertunity is going to have to wait in the gate for a long time, but I’d rather wait in the 11-hole than wait in the one-hole. I think he’s second choice because he’s gotten the closest to California Chrome this year," Baffert said.
Baffert says there's a problem with the colt's left front hoof, so he's decided to forgo this year's Derby. Hoppertunity will be examined by vets later today in Lexington.
Baffert won the Derby three times in his first seven visits to Louisville – with Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998 and War Emblem in 2002. Since then, Baffert is 0-for-11 with an average finish of 11th.
