POV | Kentucky Taxpayers Getting the Shaft (5/1/14)
It seems as if Kentucky always sits near the bottom when states are ranked in some new study.
But we actually manage to rank as high as number ten in a survey released earlier this week by WalletHub.com. The only trouble is, it's a ranking of the states that get the least bang for its taxpayer dollars.
That's right - once again, the Bluegrass State is cited as a prime example of a place where inefficiency, incompetence and good old plain waste prevent citizens from realizing all the government services they should expect from the taxes they pay. Blame for this abysmal situation could be placed on a number of doorsteps. But I believe the primary culprit in a case of such gross underperformance is our dysfunctional legislature.
Time and again, we begin a new General Session with high hopes of finally addressing some of our worst problems, only to find ourselves suckered once more by a bunch of career politicians who are more concerned with getting re-elected than in formulating real solutions. And all we get is the bill for the mess they refuse to clean up.
At Derby time, we like to think Kentucky is a little paradise on earth. But let's not let the roses and juleps blind us to the fact that life here the other 51 weeks of the year is not what it should be. Kentuckians deserve better. And if our current lawmakers can't deliver it, we have to find some new ones who will.
