Fashion designers meeting fans, offer tips on what to wear for Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB)--  The Kentucky Derby is all about the fashion and some top designers are visiting Louisville,  even helping people put together the perfect outfit.  It's last minute hat and dress shopping - for Badgley Mischka fans. The design duo well known in the fashion helping women look their best.

Mark Badgley of Badgley Mischka says, "We design Derby hats. This is just a really fun time of year. We always try to come here and put together a special meaningful Derby together."

James Mischka of Badgley Mischka says, "I think don't be afraid of color. Don't be afraid to all go all out for Derby because if you don't go all the way, then you just go home."
They showed WDRB two of their most popular dresses.

Mischka says, "Ann-marie is wearing a spliced scuba dress made out of 3 colors spliced together. It's also a perfect Derby dress."
At Von Maur, it's a party. There are long lines for people waiting to meet fashioner designer Betsey Johnson. She met with fans for 90 minutes on Thursday afternoon.

Betsey Johnson says, "My stuff is all over the place, pretty... punky," She says for Derby whatever you wear.. you've got to feel great in it. But, she doesn't want to see casual wear like jeans.

Johnson says don't be afraid to take risks even wearing lingerie to the track. She says, "She's going to wear a tutu over it so it's a little more special, a little more fluffy and not so much just underwear nightgown."

The designers say Louisville becomes the fashion capital of the world at this time of year. They even get some ideas here.

And if you can't find that perfect hat, Johnson says make your own. "I like to collect, keep old crummy flowers. So, I pinned them all together and put them on the hat."

The stores are expected to be busy all the way until Saturday morning with last minute shoppers.
