Families celebrate overcoming infertility with the help of advanced reproductive technology

DALLAS, May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Approximately 11 percent of American couples wanting to have children experience difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term. Many of these couples fear they will never be able to celebrate Mother's Day or Father's Day. Thanks to the advanced technology and expert care available at Vivere-Dallas Surgery Center & Fertility Laboratory, hundreds of couples have achieved their dream of parenthood and will celebrate this weekend.

Vivere-Dallas is hosting its 3rd Annual Baby Reunion on Sunday, May 4, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for individuals and couples who have conceived with the help of cutting-edge techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). The event will take place at Eddie Dean Ranch, 944 South Lamar, Dallas.

More than 350 people-including babies, toddlers, tweens and teens conceived with the assistance of advanced reproductive technology-are expected to attend the event. Invitations have been sent to the patients of two the state's leading infertility specialists, Noel Peng, M.D., and Anil Pinto, M.D.

Guests at the reunion party will include the Delzell family. Alison Delzell, 39, thanks Dr. Pinto and Vivere-Dallas for helping her overcome secondary infertility. Secondary infertility is estimated to affect approximately 4 million families in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 11 percent of couples who already have a child will go on to experience secondary infertility.

Today, Alison and her husband Matt are the proud parents of "big sister" Harlow, 4, and six-month-old twin boys, Tyler and Nash. Alison's journey to parenthood was not an easy one. She experienced two miscarriages before conceiving Harlow.

"We felt so blessed to have Harlow," Alison said. "But we also wanted to add to our family. We tried for two more years to have another baby and I had two more miscarriages."

Willing to do "whatever it would take" to grow her family, Alison made an appointment with Dr. Pinto at ReproMed Fertility Center in Dallas. Dr. Pinto is a board-certified and fellowship-trained reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist. He is the medical director and founder of ReproMed Fertility Center.

"I wanted answers," Alison said. "I wasn't looking for a doctor to hold my hand. I needed someone to take control and give me the facts. When I met with Dr. Pinto, he told me we would figure it out together, and I would get pregnant. I placed my trust in him."

Diagnostic tests did not reveal any known causes for Alison and Matt's infertility problems.

According to Dr. Pinto, one in seven couples encounters infertility-and secondary infertility is actually as common as not being able to conceive at all in the first place. "One third of infertility can be attributed to male factors, and about one third can be attributed to female factors. Other cases are due to a combination of problems in both partners or, as in the case of Alison and Matt, to unknown causes," he said.

"After two failed cycles with Clomid (an oral medication used to stimulate ovulation), we did IVF and we were fortunate to have six viable embryos," Alison said. The plan included returning two fertilized eggs to Alison's uterus. Although the first two attempts did not achieve pregnancy, the "third time was the charm" and on October 1, 2014, Alison gave birth to Tyler and Nash.

"It has been one heck of a journey for us," Allison said. "The day they called me with the news that I was pregnant was the best day of my life. It was the moment I had been waiting for."

Dr. Peng and Dr. Pinto are looking forward to visiting with their infertility patients and meeting their growing families at the Baby Reunion.

"This is one event that I look forward to every year," Dr. Peng said. "I am very proud to be a part of our patients' lives, and this reunion party gives us the unique opportunity to meet the kids and to say thank you to the parents." Dr. Peng is the medical director and founder of IVF Institute in Dallas. He is board-certified and fellowship-trained reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist.

The theme of this year's Baby Reunion is "Circus Spectacular," and will feature a monkey comedy act, circus performers, bounce house and face painting. The event will include a catered meal and prize drawings for adults and children. The event allows former patients to reconnect with the physicians and staff who played an integral role in their fertility treatment.
