Fire destroys home in city's west end

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Fire gutted a home in Louisville's California neighborhood Friday.

It happened shortly after 10 a.m., on Date Street., near south 22nd Street.

By the time firefighters arrived, the home was already engulfed in flames and smoke, so crews took a defensive position and worked to contain it before it spread to nearby buildings.

More than two dozen firefighters responded helped extinguish the flames, which were intense enough to melt the siding on a home next door.

Fire officials tell us the building was vacant and had been for the last two month, but three people inside made it out safely.

Arson investigators are looking what caused the fire.
