SLIDESHOW: Stars walk the Red Carpet at Derby 140

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Great weather had many celebrities showing up early to the Derby this year.

It is the one day of the year when the world's focus is on Louisville, Kentucky and the stars from TV, music and sports come out to play.

"What's your favorite thing about coming to the Derby?" WDRB's Lindsay Allen asked actress Angela Bassett.

"The people, the energy, everyone is so excited," Bassett said. "Of course you know there's nothing like southern hospitality."

In fact, you never know if that southern hospitality could inspire the next blockbuster. Jerry Bruckheimer has produced films like Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean.

"Would you ever do a movie surrounding the Kentucky Derby, do you think?" Allen asked.

"You never know, you never know what your future brings," Bruckheimer said.

Ken Griffey Jr. has been to Louisville a few times, but he says it's usually to test drive some Slugger bats. He's not ruling out a visit this time, but not for what you might think.

"I still have connections there in case, so just in case, I need a bat to use while my daughter is starting to date," Griffey, Jr. said.

"You know you enjoy the race, but it's everything that kinda leads up to the race I really enjoy about it," said pro basketball player Scottie Pippen.

"I've just been doing signings and appearances, and then on top of that, I finish up my school work," said U of L basketball player Russ Smith. "I'll be graduated May 10."

And you count on the rock stars for the fashion that breaks with convention.

"I'm the only one in leather pants," said Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi.

And what brings them back to Louisville?

"Kentucky brings me back," said Marlon Jackson of the Jackson 5. "Here the people are so nice and then the Derby is great."

"A lot of pageantry its just exciting, you know?" said Jackie Jackson, also of the Jackson 5.

And from the Red Carpet, all the stars and celebrities went upstairs to watch the races on Millionaires Row.
