Police in Bullitt County seize pot, cash, after lengthy investigation

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Bullitt County have arrested two Colorado residents as part of a 7-month, multi-state drug investigation focusing on the distribution of marijuana.

According to the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office, on May 5, detectives with the Bullitt County Drug Task Force detectives intercepted a vehicle coming from Colorado and seized eight pounds of "mid-grade marijuana." Police say the pot is worth about $16,000 on the street. Detectives say the marijuana was hidden in a speaker box located in the trunk of the vehicle. The speaker box had to be taken apart to recover the marijuana.

Also seized was liquid marijuana, a vacuum sealer, and approximately $1,000.

Thirty-four-year-old Joshua Ford and 32-year-old Lisa Nelson were both arrested. They are both charged with trafficking marijuana.

"Eight pounds of this compressed type of marijuana is a large amount, you don't see that - compressed marijuana - around here too often," said Detective Mike Murdoch, with the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives say it was all intercepted en route to Bullitt County on Sunday.

Murdoch explains, "The information was it was coming to Bullitt County, we know this was coming to Bullitt County."

That's why police say this was anything but luck or a random stop.

"Yes, this couple was one that was being watched and, like I said, we think that based upon the timing of the Derby that it was a good opportunity for them to think that law enforcement was a little too busy to worry about them, however, that wasn't the case," said Murdoch.

The arrests are the result of an undercover investigation and the work of Bullitt County Drug Task Force.

"They're on fire, they're doing well, I mean, they love it," said Sheriff David Greenwell.

Sheriff Greenwell created the six-man task force and says he likes what he has seen so far.

"It is starting to pay off now, it's really doing well."

In fact, this is the third arrest the drug task force has made in the last three weeks. The others include significant busts at Gilbert's Pay Lake and shutting down a local tattoo shop where the owner was allegedly selling guns and drugs inside.

Greenwell says, "I get message after message, thank you after thank you, people send me cards and letters here all the time, we've really taken down some of the bigger players here in Bullitt County."

And detectives say there are more to come.

"In the next few months...there's going to be a whole lot more, it's a large-scale investigation on this one here but there are numerous other large-scale investigations that we have going on," said Murdoch.

Bullitt County detectives tell us there will be a lot more arrests in connection with this case -- perhaps dozens of arrests.
