First day on job for interim West Buechel Police Chief
Some West Buechel Council members don't agree with who the Mayor appointed as Interim Chief.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was a heated West Buechel Council Meeting last week, with some council members at odds with Mayor Sharon Fowler. That's after she appointed Sergeant Gary Sharp as the interim chief over promoting a Lieutenant. Police Chief Jeff Manning resigned to work in ministry.
"Nobody likes change, that's all I can say," said Fowler. "It's possible that's what's going on is the change taking place."
"I'd like to see them follow the rank and file and I'd like for that person to be brought before the Council and see what the Council says," said Councilman Loy Crawford.
"I really ordinarily would have taken that second person, but for reasons, simpler reasons, there was no communication there," Fowler responded. "I would really have to communicate with the person to work with them."
In a letter to council members, Fowler talks about appointing Sharp and says the chief position will be open for 30 days, then she'll nominate a person for the job and Council will have to approve it.
Sharp says he understands why he was selected.
"There could very well be...some disruption because of that," Sharp said. "We're moving forward and the second in command equally is moving forward for betterment of the community and the dept."
Sharp says he has a lot of work ahead of him with the 11 officer department. He knows he doesn't have the support of all council members, but says he has a clear vision for the department.
"Some of the things I've been able to do since I've been here...equip all the vehicles with in-car computers, mobile data terminals for very low cost to no cost at all," he said.
The next Council meeting is on May 13 at 6 p.m.
