Full council could take up Waterfront Park tavern zoning Thurs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One metro council member is worried about bars and clubs popping up in or near Waterfront Park.

Council member Brent Ackerson says he wants to hold off on zoning changes allowing "taverns" serving food and alcohol, in the area.

A council committee approved the idea Monday afternoon. It could go before the full council as early as Thursday.

Changes would apply to the park and other areas in waterfront zoning districts. Ackerson wants to wait until a specific tavern might want to build in the area. But supporters believe metro council and the waterfront development board will provide adequate oversight.

"They're not going to put a bar in the park like some people are having us believe," says council member Madonna Flood, "that's not going to happen."

However, Ackerson says he wants "more certainty. I want to know what's going on before we carte blanche, open the floodgates and turn over the potential that things could go awry on us."

Officials say there are no specific plans pending for any new taverns near the river. A prime site is the area between Tumbleweed and the U of L rowing center on the north side of River Road in Waterfront Park.
