Defendants plead not guilty in beating of off-duty cop

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two men accused of beating an off-duty police officer in Jeffersonville have pleaded not guilty in their cases.

Sebastian Racine and James Whobrey appeared in Clark Circuit Court No. 4 on Monday. The judge accepted their not guilty pleas and set trials for October, according to online court records. Racine, of Louisville, is charged with felony battery and criminal mischief. Whobrey, of Shepherdsville, Ky., is charged with felony battery.

Each man is free on $7,500 cash bond, posted one day after deputy prosecutor Jeremy Mull announced they were wanted in connection with an altercation in the parking lot of Buckhead Mountain Grill on Riverside in Jeffersonville.

The altercation happened on March 30, Mull said last week. It involved Racine denting the car door of Keith Hillman, a Heritage Creek, Ky., police officer who was off duty. The situation escalated into a fight in which Racine and Whobrey each assaulted Hillman, Mull said.

Hillman suffered a broken leg and other injuries. He identified himself as a police officer, but that did not stop the attack, Mull said.
