Louisville, KY. -- (WDRB) Motivation for many athletes these days comes in the form of hashtags. Such is the case for the U of L Lacrosse team as they embark on their first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament.
The Cardinals are riding an 11-game win streak as they prepare to meet Ohio State Friday night in Evanston, Illinois. The Buckeyes won an early-season meeting between the two teams 12-11. Louisville won the Big East regular season title then followed that up with its first league tournament crown, holding off Georgetown on the Hoyas home field Saturday.
Now it's time for new motivation.
"Monday we got them refocused and talking about choosing a new mission," said head coach Kellie Young. "We accomplished winning the Big East Championship. That was our mission coming in, our hashtag, so I said now you need a new one. Anything can happen in the NCAA tournament and we've got to have something to work for."
Her players say they knew this could be a special group back in the fall. And they seem to have gotten the message that it's time for new goals.
"We set a new mission Monday," said Senior Midfielder/Defender Monica Negron. We watched video from the game, things we need to clean up. We picked out our new mission, #Towson or #SurviveandAdvance, one of those things."
Junior Attack Faye Brust added, "We talked about it Monday before practice, our new goal is the road to Towson, so that's the final four. There's a new hashtag. Survive and advance. So we're definitely going to go get Ohio State Friday and then Northwestern Sunday."
Towson is in Maryland and is the sight of this year's final four. The Cardinals and Buckeyes meet at 8:00 pm Eastern Friday. The winner gets the host school, Northwestern Sunday.
You can help send off the team Thursday at 10:20 AM next to their home field at the Yum! Center on Floyd Street . And have your hashtags ready.
