LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Eight thoroughbred horses were killed in a barn fire early Friday near the Keeneland racetrack.
WKYT in Lexington is reporting the fire happened around 1 a.m. Friday on Rice Road, which is behind Keeneland.
Firefighters say 10 horses were in the barn when the fire started. Horse trainer Gerry Carwood said he was able to get two foals out of a smaller barn, but the heat and smoke were too much for him to get into the larger barn, which was destroyed by the time firefighters arrived.
Employees working in the control tower at the nearby airport were the first to call in the fire.
No people were injured in the fire. Fire officials are investigating to determine the cause of the blaze.
