Major progress on East End Tunnel

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Driving on northbound I-265, you can see the progress made on the East End tunnel. It will extend 1,700 feet under U.S. 42 and the historic Drumanard Estate.

Marti Gibbon and her dog Casey always take walks around their Bridgeport neighborhood. She says she was never in favor of the East End Bridge.

"The dust, the fumes, the noise.. it's not very pleasant," Gibbon said, adding that, "I think as far as the building, the tunneling and all of that, they're doing what they need to do. I just wish it wasn't here."

"The southbound lane is now about 850 feet, northbound lane is about 650 feet," said Dan Hartlage of WVB East End Partners. "To put that in perspective, the entire tunnel is about 1,700 feet. So they're about halfway through. Another way to look at it is, Cochran Hill Tunnel at I-64 is about 450 feet."

Blasting for the underground tunnel began in January. Work is being done around-the-clock Monday through Saturday.

"In terms of day to day challenges, it's just hard work," Hartlage said. "It takes a while. You blast, takes a day to get rock and soil out, then you blast and do it again."

The East End Crossing project will connect Prospect to Utica, Indiana. The Kentucky approach to the new bridge will extend I-265 at U.S. 42 to the bridge, adding a new, four-lane 1.4-mile section. The Indiana Approach will also be four lanes and will extend I-265 by four miles.

"I also don't like the idea that we had eagles that we could see over at Harrod's Creek which we overlook," Gibbon said. "They are no longer here. We are doing a lot to change this area of Prospect that I don't like. I like the quiet peacefulness. When I moved here, that is what we had."

The East End Bridge is still expected to be completed in Oct. 2016.
