5K promotes confidence, community among young girls

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of girls from local schools hit the pavement Saturday as part of the Girls On The Run 5k-Fun Run.

It's the sixth year for the event, which was held at Iroquois Park. For the past ten weeks, the girls, ranging in age from 3rd to 8th grade, met twice a week to run and to participate in developmental life skills lessons.

19 JCPS schools participated and created community service projects. Organizers say the program is making a big difference in how young women view themselves and their futures.

The girls and their running buddies echoed the same message. "It's not just about the running," said Nate Norrenbuck. "It's about being positive and being a good person."

WDRB's Kelly Davis was the emcee of the event today. More than 240 girls, plus hundreds of adult running buddies, took part in the event.
