Weather radar added to upgraded LG&E power outage app

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- The next time there is a power outage, turn to your phone. LG&E and Kentucky Utilities have upgraded their website and app. It's now more user-friendly and includes the weather radar.

Kentuckiana has had its share of bad weather over the years with ice and windstorms that have knocked out power to thousands.

In 2010, LG&E and Kentucky Utilities launched the online outage map on its website and app to give people an idea of how many residents are out of power in different areas. Now the company has upgraded the programs.

"The major change that users will notice is the weather radar overlay," said Natasha Collins, an LG&E spokeswoman. "We call it 'Weather Bug' and what it does...it allows the user to see not just get the outage information, but see what's happening on weather radar simultaneously."

Customers can now get a better view of outages in particular regions, counties and zip codes. You can "favorite" the areas you want to automatically come up on the map like your home or business.

Through the app, you can also report power outages, directly call the company and find out how long it could take for your power to be turned back on.

Since 2010, the outage app has been downloaded 50,000 times. Anyone with an older version just needs to go the App Store to get the latest version.

"We want to keep up with technology," Collins said. "Technology moves paces ahead. We just want to make sure that the same good information that they've come to rely on is there with the most up-to-date current technology that they need."
