California Chrome heads for next leg of Triple Crown

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - California Chrome's time at Churchill Downs is over.

He has departed for the Preakness and with the way horse training is these days, who knows if he'll ever come back to the Twin Spires considering how much money can be earned in stud fees? He left around 10 a.m. Monday morning loading up on the trailer that pulled up to Barn 20.

Assistant trainer Allan Sherman was left in charge. Sherman's father Art, who is also California Chrome's head trainer, will meet him at Pimlico. The horse's exercise rider and two others traveled with him. There's a drive to Lexington and a flight to Baltimore to get to the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Upon departing, those remaining reflected on their Derby experience.

Alan Sherman said, "The time has really flown by. It's probably been the best time of my life. Other than seeing my daughter born, that was probably the single most awesome thing I've ever seen in my life. Living this whole dream has just been great."

California Chrome's exercise rider, Willie Delgado said, "A lot of people just look at us and go 'Alright, go California Chrome,' then they're like 'are you with the camp?' I'm like 'well I galloped the horse.' They say 'oh my god, can I get an autograph.' I say 'That's the trainer. He's the one you wanna ask for an autograph.' It's nice. It's been really nice."

Even though California Chrome is riding first class to Pimlico, Alan Sherman says the group is still blue collar, as everyone else is riding coach on Southwest Airlines.
