LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new farmer's market is bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to the downtown lunch crowd.
The Gray Street Farmer's Market opened May 15. It will be open every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., through the end of October. It will sell fruits and vegetables, as well as jams, breads and other foods made with locally grown produce. The Gray Street Farmer's Market is part of a partnership between U of L's Public Health school and the Metro Department of Public Health.
To make it available to everyone, the market accepts payment with SNAP benefits.
Organizers say a farmer's market is a big step for the area.
"Where we're located is a food desert, so we set up this market so we could increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables for the people that live and work in the east downtown area.
The market is also a lunchtime destination, with two different food trucks on site each week.
