LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U of L researchers plan to use plants -- tobacco, soybeans and colored berries -- to develop new cancer treatments and vaccines.

On Friday morning, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center received a $5.5 million grant from Helmsley Charitable Trust. It will help researchers move into clinical trial vaccines for cervical and colon cancer. They will also work to develop plant-based drug delivery systems to find ways for anti-cancer drugs to be transported directly to human tumors.

The Helmsley Charitable Trust also has funded research at U of L focused on helping people with spinal cord injuries.
