LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - June 1 marks the return of the Louisville Free Public Library’s Summer Reading program, according to a news release.

Presented by the Library Foundation, this year’s program asks kids to “READ BIG.” Each year the free 10-week program encourages children to read, or have read to them, at least 10 books, offering prizes and incentives for readers including weekly book giveaways and grand prize drawings held at the end of the summer.

Every child who completes the program will receive an official Summer Reading backpack, along with passes to local attractions like the Kentucky Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns, a Bats baseball game, the YMCA, and many more.

Children’s Grand Prizes include nineteen $500 Family Shopping Sprees at Barnes & Noble, tickets for one lucky reader and a group of his or her closest friends to a Louisville Bats game in the Mayor’s suite, and more.

Teens also have a program called “Teen Summer Reading (TSR).” Open to 6th-12th-graders, the TSR program encourages teens to read six books and complete one activity like writing a book review or designing a new cover for a favorite book. Teens who complete the program will receive a pair of earbud headphones and passes to local attractions and U of L games. The TSR Grand Prize giveaways include a tablet computer, U of L football tickets, and gift cards to Barnes & Noble.

Summer Reading begins June 1, but there will be a celebratory kick off at the Main Library on May 31 from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The event will include performances, games, crafts, and dinosaurs.

Summer Reading entry cards can be picked up at any of the Library’s 18 locations beginning June 1.
