CRAWFORD | Top contender Danza out of the Belmont with health issues

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Danza, the third-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby who was expected to be a top challenger to California Chrome's Triple Crown bid in the Belmont Stakes, will not run in the race, his trainer Todd Pletcher told multiple outlets.

David Grening of The Daily Racing form reported via Twitter that the horse had not done well at Belmont, had lost weight and in general wasn't recovering well from some skin issues he suffered after the Kentucky Derby.

Grening says the horse will be sent to Ocala, Fla., for recovery before Pletcher decides on his next move.

In other Belmont updates, today, the Racing Form says John Velazquez will get the mount on Ride On Curlin, his third jockey in three Triple Crown races. Joel Rosario, who rode him to a second-place finish in the Preakness, is committed to riding Christophe Clement-trained Tonalist. Javier Castellano will get the mount on Pletcher's other Preakness horse, the WinStar Farm-owned Commissioner.
