Suspects plead not guilty to stealing more than $1 million from Abbey of Gethsemani

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- On Thursday morning, a former accountant and his wife pleaded not guilty to dozens of charges that they stole more than $1 million from an abbey.

Officials say John Hutchins worked as an accountant at the Abbey of Gethsemani when he began embezzling money from an abbey-owned account in 2008.

He and his wife, Carrie, appeared before a judge in Nelson County with their attorney this morning. They both face dozens of felony charges after the Nelson County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation in February after receiving complaints from the abbey.

The judge set the trial for September.
