Inmate escapes from custody, leads police on chase through Shelby County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police dispatchers tell WDRB that I-64 westbound was completely shut down near Exit 35 -- the Highway 53 exit in Shelby County -- Friday afternoon after an inmate escaped from custody and led officers on a chase.

According to Lisa Lamb, a spokeswoman from the Kentucky Department of Corrections, the incident involved a 37-year-old inmate named Fabian Valentine. Valentine was being transported to the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty, Ky., when he escaped from a corrections officer while at a rest area along I-64 in Winchester, Ky.

Valentine allegedly took a correction officer's gun, stole a minivan from a family at the rest area and led police on a chase through Lexington, Franklin County and ending at the 35 mile marker in Shelbyville.

Valentine was taken into custody, but not before ramming a state police cruiser and crashing the stolen vehicle, according to authorities. No one was hurt, according to a Kentucky Department of Corrections spokeswoman.

WDRB's Lawrence Smith was on the scene and took the images that you see at right.
